In the 1940s and 1950s, Hurtado melds biomorphic figures with abstraction in her 'Resist' series, surrounding figures with matter until increasingly indistinguishable from their surroundings. These early works on paper employ colorful crayon combined with a black ink wash that beads on the waxy surface or soaks into the negative space of the paper.
