In Our Image: The Fragile Body in Contemporary Art

The Warehouse, Dallas
Artists have long used the human figure to reflect on societal anxieties and psychological traumas. In Our Image: The Fragile Body in Contemporary Art brings this tendency into the present moment. By gathering works from the Rachofsky and the Hartland & Mackie / Labora collections, alongside private and institutional loans, the exhibition draws on the human form as a window into identity, psychology, and consciousness. Here, the figure is not a symbol of perfection, but rather, a site of striving. These works adopt vulnerability as a throughline, posing the fragile human body as a site for storytelling. At times animal or automated, they rely on moments of fallibility as a lens with which to reframe the nature of contemporary selfhood. Placing work from different cultural contexts in conversation, the exhibition looks at the vulnerable body as both a stage for the self and a reflection of society.

Body on the Line

MoMA, Floor 4, 420
This gallery brings together works by an international group of women artists from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, an incredibly rich period in the history of the struggle for women’s rights around the world. These artists engaged with feminism and femininity by drawing on personal histories or staking positions on social issues. Some took a distinctly conceptual approach in establishing the ground for the intermingling of art and politics or in offering a feminist critique of the traditional boundaries of gender in their societies. Others communicated the experiences of women in more sensuous or intuitive ways. “I always feel the painting come from my soul,” declared the artist Kamala Ibrahim Ishag. Her evocative painting of a commune of women undergoing a supernatural transformation anchors this wide-ranging ensemble of works by women who have inspired myriad artists after them. Organized by Smooth Nzewi, The Steven and Lisa Tananbaum Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, with Danielle Johnson, former Curatorial Assistant, Department of Drawings and Prints.

Mother Lode: Material and Memory

James Cohan Gallery, 48 and 52 Walker Street, New York
Organized by Abigail Ross Goodman, Molly Epstein, and Ellen Langan, “Mother lode” is a term used to indicate the primary vein of a valuable resource, or, more colloquially, to point to the real or imagined origin of something of great import or abundance. Plumbing the possibilities of this linguistic trope, this exhibition brings together more than forty artistic practices, choreographed in chapters as a collective cohabitation that offers myriad ruminations on beginnings. The artists included deploy both memory and material as generative forces, probing ideas of land as Mother Earth, the bonds of mother and child, the physical accumulation of experience, and the tending nature of ongoing diaristic pursuits. From the development of personal mythologies to processes laid bare through the cycles of extraction and regeneration, the works in this exhibition span form and medium, dating from the late 1960s to the present day. They capture the universality of lineage that unfurls in the activities of making and the inherent truths discovered in process.

“I look at the moon like a fellow traveler”

LAMB Gallery, London
A group exhibition curated by Claudia Cheng. “I look at the moon like a fellow traveler” brings together ten female artists whose practices conceive all life forms as part of a cyclical, interconnected entity. In their work, human forms assume the silhouettes of mountains, seashells spiral into celestial constellations. Weaving fragments of bodies into landscapes, the works in this show honour the kinship between humans, nature, and the cosmos. The exhibition takes its title from a quote by Luchita Hurtado (1920-2020), the sensational Venezuelan-American artist who dedicated her career to bridging the gap between the self and all other living forms.bInspired by the late painter, the artists in this show share Hurtado’s belief in the universality of all life forms.
